LG Q6: less is more to beat Note8 out the door

Ok, so the new LG Q6 “only” has a 5.5-inch screen, but it does have the 18:9 aspect ratio, it’s $1100 cheaper at $399, and while there’s no style, it’s in JB Hi-Fi stores from today.

LG has brought its more affordable version of the G6, dubbed the Q6, to Australia, while still promising “the essential features of premium LG devices and elegant design to a mid-range smartphone.”

Like its bigger brother, the G6, LG’s Q6 uses the 18:9 FullVision Display technology, but in a smaller body, which LG says showcases “how the emerging trend of large screens on smartphones is being taken to an all new level.”

LG explains that it is “catering to the increased demand in consumers watching content on their mobiles – delivering the first smartphone in the mid-price category to bring this full screen experience to the masses.”

Available from today (24 August) at $399 from JB Hi-Fi, it will then arrive in “selected Officeworks stores and other channels soon after.”

Angus Jones, GM of Marketing for LG Australia in the great Game of Jones Phones Thrones said: “The LG Q6 makes high-end smartphone features more accessible to Australians for an exceptional price.

“At LG we understand our consumers are using their smartphones more than ever to watch and create content. That’s why the Q6 is a great option for those wanting a smartphone with a large screen, sleek design and strong camera capabilities.”

LG talks up “the unique combination of the 5.5-inch FHD+ FullVision Display with its 18:9 aspect ratio” which it says “makes video browsing, gaming and multi-tasking more immersive.”

And, with minimised bezels all the rage, LG says its are “designed to maximise the display, while still preventing accidental touching of the screen when being held.”

Taking up its “minimalist and sleek design,” LG proudly boasts its Q6 is “a smartphone of elegance.”

Throwing shade on particular competitors, LG goes all snap happy when it notes its Q6 has “no unsightly camera bump” while stating the “attractive curves with rounded corners of the body match the corners of the display.”

And, with the Q6 “packaged in a stylish metallic frame,” we’re told it “manages to be both lightweight and sturdy for a more durable day-to-day usage experience.”

“Not only does the Q6 look good,” says LG, “it is extremely easy to use.”

You, (presumably, because who else?) will “benefit from ergonomic research during the development of the LG G6” which has ensured “the Q6 is also comfortable to hold and use with one hand.”

“In another nod to user convenience,” LG faces us with the news its “proprietary Face Recognition feature allows owners to unlock the Q6 quickly and with little hassle.”

As expected, the LG puts its “heritage of reliable camera capabilities” in the frame.

The company notes its newest mid-range flagship “incorporates a 100-degree wide angle selfie camera that allows photo-takers to include a large group of friends and family in the shot with ease.”

That’s not all, of course - the Square Camera Mode “enables the merging of two images into one and the creation of square grid collages popular with social media fans.”

Want even more? We’re told: “the camera’s improved LG UX 6.0 takes full advantage of the FullVision Display and 18:9 aspect ratio so that users can get the most out of the additional screen space.”

Then there’s the metal frame surrounding the Q6 being constructed of the familiar sounding “ultra-strong 7000 series aluminium,” which LG says is “one of the highest strength aluminium alloys available and used extensively in industries such as aerospace,” (and Apple Watches ;-)
