Emerson powers up with change of name to Vertiv

Global energy infrastructure provider Emerson Network Power has had a rebranding, changing its name to Vertiv and appointing a new chief executive to run the company.

The rebranding of the company, based in the US state of Ohio, comes with the completion of the acquisition of the infrastructure provider by global investment firm Platinum Equity in a transaction valued in excess of US$4 billion. Emerson also retained a minority interest in the company.

The acquisition by Platinum was originally announced in August and the global investment firm is now in full control of the newly branded business.

Rob Johnson, most recently an operating partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, has been appointed chief executive of Vertiv. Johnson spent 10 years at data centre infrastructure provider American Power Conversion (APC) and was president and CEO of APC when the company was sold to Schneider Electric for US$6.1 billion in 2007.

“Rob has a unique blend of industry knowledge, operational acumen and entrepreneurial spirit.

“Rob knows the technology inside out, especially in data centre environments, and understands what customers need. He knows what it takes as a CEO to inspire employees and lead a profitable, global enterprise. He’s also an innovator who shares our vision for what Vertiv can become as a standalone business.”

Johnson said the transition to new ownership provides a “unique opportunity” for the company.

“As an independent company, Vertiv will operate with great freedom to make business strategy and investment decisions, move more quickly like a startup, and focus on innovative solutions for our customers, including those in the growing cloud computing, mobile and IoT networks.”

In support of its rebranding as Vertiv, the company has unveiled a new website, and starting in January next year it will launch an advertising campaign to introduce its new brand with the theme “Your Mission is Critical.”
