Note7 debacle hits Samsung 3Q profits

Samsung Electronics has taken a battering from the recall and subsequent cessation of production of its Galaxy Note7 device and this is reflected in its results for the third quarter.

The company's net profit fell nearly 17% to 4.54 trillion Korean won (US$4.0 billion), according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.

The mobile division reported its smallest quarterly profit since the company launched its Galaxy series more than six years ago.

Mobile operating profit fell 96% from the corresponding quarter a year earlier to 100 billion won following the Note7 debacle.

Samsung, which launched the Note7 in August, was forced to recall it the following month and finally end production altogether in October following numerous cases of exploding phones.

Overall operating profit for the quarter, which ended on 30 September, was down to 5.2 trillion won, a fall of 30%, compared to 7.4 trillion won for the corresponding quarter a year ago.

The company's overall revenue fell 7.5% to 47.82 trillion won.

Earnings were propped up by the semiconductor and display panels divisions. Semiconductor sales fell 7.9% compared to the corresponding quarter last year, to 3.37 trillion won. Display panel sales improved by 9.7% to 1.02 trillion won. These two divisions accounted for 84% of the overall operating profit.

The Journal said shareholders approved the elevation of Lee Jae-yong as an executive director. He is seen as the emerging leader of the Seoul-based conglomerate.
