VIDEO: Telstra boosting ‘field workforce’ by 1000 over next six months

One thousand Telstra techs, or "communications technicians" dubbed "CTs" will be "put into the field for Telstra across Australia over the next six months to improve the customer experience through reduced installation and fault repair times".

When it comes to Telstra CTs, you'll see new communications technicians over the next six months, with Telstra executive director of customer service delivery, Brian Harcourt, noting "the new CTs will be a mix of full-time Telstra employees and sub-contractors through Telstra’s workforce supply partner, ISGM".

Harcourt said: “Connectivity is now absolutely central in so many homes and businesses and our customers expect us to install new services and fix faults as quickly as possible.

“We know that sometimes the experience our customers can have when they need a fault fixed or a new service installed can improve and we are building up our resources to do just that.

“Increasing the number of CTs that perform these tasks will have the dual benefit of enabling us to get through more work and freeing up our more experienced technicians to deal with more complex tasks.”

We are told the new CTs "are required to complete up to 17 weeks of training and jobs will be created around Australia".

They will begin working in the following states by Christmas with the balance of resources to begin a month later.

  • Western Australia: 43
  • South Australia: 94
  • Victoria/Tasmania: 110
  • Queensland: 151
  • New South Wales/ACT: 503

Harcourt added: “We have 600 communications technicians in training and the first 140 have already hit the field. “We’re seeing the benefits of the first group of new communications technicians who have received positive feedback from our customers.

“These additional resources will also be valuable, especially as we approach the time of the year when extreme weather events can disrupt our customers’ services.”

Here’s a video from 2013 from "West One Services" that I found on YouTube via a Telstra Exchange blog post from 2013, entitled "A Day in the Life of a Telstra Communications Technician".

The video in that blog post (embedded below) is called ‘Try it for 5’ – a series of five-minute videos "exploring a range of occupations through the eyes of people who perform them".

The video is obviously three years old so there are presumably changes to equipment etc, but if you’re interested in being one of Telstra’s new technicians, then this video probably gives you some idea of what life is like as a CT.
