It’s not just the latest 4K TVs that can support HDR content, but Sony’s Xperia XZ Premium smartphone, too, with Netflix shows in HDR now enjoyable in the palm of your hand.
Ok, so you might not have the several thousands of dollars that are required to buy a 4K Ultra HD TV with HDR capabilities, but you might be looking for a new smartphone.
While it is likely (but not guaranteed) that more 2017 flagships will support HDR, and presumably even more still in 2018, Sony’s Xperia XZ Premium is now ready and waiting for you to buy it so you can watch Netflix “stunning high dynamic range” or “HDR” content on it.
John Featherstone, Sony Mobile Oceania’s managing director, said: “HDR allows viewers to experience films and TV shows in stunning, true to life colour and greater detail for striking realism.
{loadposition alex08}“Netflix is on the leading edge of entertainment, and now XZ Premium users can watch content at its absolute best anywhere they want.”
Now, there is a slight catch here besides needing to shell out for a new XZ Premium.
To watch TV shows and movies available in HDR, you need to change the video quality streaming to “high” in your Netflix settings, while also ensuring a good connection speed. However, this only applies to Premium Netflix account holders, which is the most expensive Netflix offering, but also allows you to watch simultaneously on the largest number of devices, and at the highest 4K and now HDR quality.
Details on HDR requirements are here.
As for examples of Netflix HDR content, this includes “Okja, Chef’s Table and the entire slate of Marvel’s TV series".
More HDR content is promised for the rest of 2017, including “Stranger Things 2, Marvel’s The Defenders and Bright".
So, if you have a spare $1099, you can find out how to buy your very own Sony Xperia XZ Premium here – and may the HDR content be with you.
