The 2017 IT Journalism Awards have been revamped to now include two new awards – one for the Best Information Security Journalist and the other a “technology issues” award recognising work that tackles technology issues.
Entries for this year’s awards, which are run each year by MediaConnect, close at midnight on April 13, with the winners in all categories announced at Luna Park, Sydney on May 12.
The two new awards replace the Media Awards for Best Website, Video, Audio and Magazine, which MediaConnect says it decided to remove because “in today’s multi-channel media environment, we wanted to increase the focus on the content and journalism, rather than its production”.
“These awards have tended to recognise a small subset of outlets who have been able to invest heavily in production.”
{loadposition peter}“In increasing our focus on technology journalism, we are introducing two new ‘beat’ awards. Firstly, there will be a Best Information Security Journalist award, which will (sic) feel has become a key topic for technology writers, and which often doesn’t have a clear category for which items should be entered.
“Secondly, we have introduced a ‘technology issues’ award. This is an award that is open across both consumer and business media, with the aim of recognising work that tackles technology issues.
“With this award, the aim is to recognise work related to issues like privacy, censorship, government policy and social impact. These stories can transcend the business/consumer classifications of the other awards, and we feel need to be judged differently to other awards that have an audience focus.”
