Apple’s new AirPods, its Bluetooth answer to no headphone jack, have scored zero out of 10 on the repairability scale – no repair or battery replacement is possible.
iFixit conducted a “teardown” and that is literally what happened. Instead of being able to reassemble, these devices are disposable – crack the case and that is it. It says, “Kids don’t try this at home.”
That is not to say that these $229 buds should be repairable. Apple has a $99 plus shipping offer for a single bud or charging case replacement on top of any warranty repairs.
iFixit states, “As we begin to pull out the boards, cables, and other bits, we're reminded of a certain wearable repair nightmare (*cough* Apple Watch *cough*). If jamming complex components into a small form factor and sealing it with a copious amount of glue were a game, Apple would be winning.”
