Dolby Atmos and XboxOne/One S/Windows 10 will allow one to experience Dolby Atmos content and sound in your home (you will need a Dolby Atmos enabled speaker system) or on almost any pair of stereo headphones.
Mike Ybarra, Xbox’s Head of Platform Engineering, said, “At Team Xbox, we are all gamers first, and bringing Dolby Atmos support to Xbox One and Windows 10 gaming next year will bring you even further inside the action and sound of your favourite titles. The announcement also contained details of the new Xbox One and S Blu-ray Bitstream pass-through that passes untouched Blu-ray audio data to a user’s audio equipment, allowing an audio receiver or another audio device to produce a high-quality, immersive sound experience.
To use this feature, onw will need to connect the console via HDMI to a compatible audio receiver which supports decoding of popular Blu-ray audio formats.
As Xbox One S has full support for 4K, HDR movie playback and works with Dolby Atmos, it is going to be the “player of choice” in any lounge room, leave alone for its gaming capabilities. Available now starting at $349 from Microsoft, it may affect sales of 4K Blu-Ray players that do a lot less.
