WD ups storage with new 14TB Helium hard disk and 7.68TB SSD

WD has upped the capacity of its proven Ultrastar 12TB He12, a fourth generation, 3.5”, helium filled hard disk drive, to 14TB and a 7.68TB NVMe, PCIe SSD for use in data centres.

ultrastar sn200 seriesThe 7.68TB SSD comes in a PCIe or SAS format. The PCIe is Gen 3 and NVMe 1.2 compatible and will reach speeds of 560,000 4KiB IOPS. It is Flash-aware RAID, has end-to-end data-path protection, advanced ECC, secure erase, PowerSafe power-loss protection. The 14TB hard disk drives come with either a 6GB/s SATA or 12Gb/s SAS interface and uses Helium that has 1/7 the density of air allowing for thinner SMR (shingled magnetic recording) platters and 2.5 million hours MTBF.

Mark Grace, senior vice president of devices at Western Digital said, "We have raised the bar in enterprise storage with our most advanced and highest capacity enterprise class SAS SSD, NVMe SSD, and HDD solutions to date. With their outstanding reliability and Quality of Service (QoS), these new additions to our industry-leading data centre portfolio enable customers across the spectrum to meet their evolving and dynamic data centre demand."

While Flash may be the “hot topic” in data centre, large raw storage still needs good old spinning disks for storage. WD has an each way bet with flash memory acquisitions including Sandisk and hard disk including HGST.
