PC shipments “better than expected” – but still not good

Australian PC (desktop, notebook, PC and Mac – excludes hybrids) shipments grew 3.2% year on year (YoY) beating estimates of a negative 3.5%.

IDC have released Q3, 2016 results for Australia and you always know that something is up when the report starts “Beats expectations”. What were those expectations, what was the base and the basis for same?

To be fair to IDC they use “sell-in” figures provided by most manufacturers and tend to be pretty spot on when compared to “sell-out” figures. Sell-in, at this time of year, however, can indicate stocking up for Christmas and back to school sales so don’t get too excited.

Sagar Raghavendra, client devices Analyst for IDC Australia, said, “Seasonal impact seemed to have been minimal, as the market bounced back after a sluggish start in the first half of the year due to Dick Smith and Toshiba exiting from the market. Harvey Norman’s Modern PC program also seems to have contributed to this growth in the consumer segment. Significant growth was observed in Education, Government and Corporate sectors, while small-medium business continued to decline.

The Notebook and Desktop PC/Mac market grew by 3.2% YoY. The Convertible [Hybrid] form factor (not part of this report – see here) grew at 91% YoY. “An increasing number of corporate and public sector agencies are deploying convertibles in large numbers; there is a healthy competition in the market between convertibles” said Sagar.

IDC Q3 segments

HP held the top position increasing its market share by 4.8% to 28.1%. HP has been pulling out all stops to be different and innovative and is offering a large portfolio from entry level to eye wateringly beautiful and expensive luxury PCs and all-in-ones. It has taken the boring out of computing.

Lenovo at 19% have an interesting range of Yoga devices for consumers, but its sales are mainly driven by corporate use. Dell at 15% is mainly driven by corporate sales.

Apple lost 5.3% market share to 12% largely due to a lack of new models and the impact of Surface-like products.

Acer’s consistent performance in consumer segment saw it gain 1.5%, ending at 11% share.
