Domino’s Pizza loves to claim world-firsts and the tech spotlight, but it looks like its drone delivery claim was seriously overcooked.
UPDATE: Domino's Pizza has responded, insisting it has indeed achieved a world-first - read all the details here!
Original story continues below:
Yesterday, we wrote about how Domino’s Pizza had claimed a ‘world-first' with 'the first commercial delivery of food by drone to a customer, anywhere in the world’ successfully in New Zealand.
However, according to Russian pizza empire, Dodo Pizza, it has tipped over Domino’s claim by actually having delivered pizzas by drone from way back in June 2014 - with plenty of international news coverage to back up its claim.

The company wrote to iTWire’s editor, and said in a statement: “We would like to bring to the public’s attention that contrary to Domino’s Pizza NZ claims, published on your site on 16 November 2016, their deliveries were not the first ever commercial pizza deliveries by drones.
“Dodo Pizza performed genuine commercial deliveries over 2 years ago, in June 2014. This was documented and extensively covered by major international media, including The Washington Post, Business Insider, FOX News, Le Monde, Al Arabiya (YouTube video in Arabic), Reuters etc.
Dodo Pizza explains its story at its website in great detail here - and in English!
Also, more recently, in September 2016, Dodo Pizza said its ‘franchises in Samara and Kazan performed promotional deliveries by drones.’
It's also great to see Dodo Pizza stating: “We support Domino’s Pizza NZ and their efforts to drive innovation in the pizza delivery industry. But we also think it is important to set the historic record straight regarding pizza deliveries by drone.”
