Microsoft has announced the first public preview of SQL Server for Linux. This preview is the next release of the database for both Windows and Linux and was announced at the company's Connect(); developer event in New York.
Back in March this year, Microsoft announced that it would be porting SQL Server to Linux.
Tiffany Wissner, senior director of data platform marketing, said the release meant that applications could be developed with SQL Server on Linux, Windows, Docker, or macOS (via Docker) and then deployed to Linux, Windows, or Docker, on-premises or in the cloud.
"We have seen strong reception for the private preview to date with more than 50% of Fortune 500 companies applying for the private preview," she said.
{loadposition sam08}Wissner said there were RPM and DEB packages for native Linux installations on Red Hat and Ubuntu. Packages for SUSE Linux would be available soon as well.
"The public preview on Windows and Linux is also available on Azure Virtual Machines (coming soon) and as images available on Docker Hub, offering a quick and easy installation within minutes," she added.
Updated versions of SQL Server tools were also released, including SQL Server Management Studio, Visual Studio SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) and SQL Server PowerShell with support for the next release of SQL Server on Windows and Linux.
