New version of LibreOffice Online released

British open-source company Collaborative Productivity, the developer of LibreOffice Online, has announced enhancements to its version of the cloud-based office suite.

Released as CODE 2.0 — Collabora Online Development Edition — this version includes one feature which many users have asked for: collaborative editing. Development and home users have been encouraged to upgrade and provide feedback.

The company said business users would be better served by waiting for Collabora Online 2.0, presumably a more stable version with kinks found in testing by home users and developers ironed out.

A media release said CODE was the best solution for those who wanted to use LibreOffice Online with their choice of file-sharing and syncing solution.

{loadposition sam08}"It permits editing of richly formatted documents directly from a Web browser, with excellent support for all popular office file formats, including text documents (docx, doc, odt), spreadsheets (xlsx, xls, ods) and presentations (pptx, ppt, odp)," the company said.

"For enterprises that look for a scalable, commercially supported version with long-term support, signed security updates and a service-level agreement, Collabora Productivity provides Collabora Online."

Collabora Productivity general manager and veteran free software and open source developer Michale Meeks said: "We want to thank our outstanding partners for making LibreOffice Online available to their community and customers, and helping our goal of Collabora Online on every cloud, everywhere.

"This latest development release, with collaborative editing, is a huge step in this exciting journey and we are looking forward to grow this project even more."
