Sporting teams are always advised to take advantage of their opponents when the latter are down. LG appears to have taken that lesson to heart in India.
The company sells a few million smartphones in the country of 1.2 billion but has always trailed far behind Samsung.
Now with its South Korean rival trying to literally put out multiple fires — the exploding Samsung Galaxy Note7 has practically become part of folklore — LG has chosen to strike at its rival as the Indian festival of Diwali approaches.
Diwali is the festival of lights and this year it falls on 30 October. It is the biggest festival of the year for Hindus who form about 80% of the population.
{loadposition sam08}According to the Indian news channel NDTV, LG has been sending out text messages asking people to avoid Samsung's "exploding products" and its wares instead.
The message reads: "Heard the news of exploding products? At LG, our products go through multiple tests to ensure safety of our most valuable asset – YOU. Have a safe Diwali with LG."
LG is not the only smartphone company to enjoy a dig at a rival who is down. In September, Motorola, which is owned by Lenovo, offered a free Incipio offGRID Power Pack with every Moto Z Droid purchase.
The package had a pithy quote: "At Moto, our priority is safety first. Unlike some manufacturers, we adhere to the highest standards in quality and testing of all our batteries."
