NBN Co to boost capacity on fixed wireless network

NBN Co, the company rolling out Australia's national broadband network, has announced that it plans to invest more in an upgrade programme to expand the capacity of its wireless towers.

The company said over the coming months it would upgrade a number of wireless towers and equip them with greater data capacity.

This was because a significant spike in the amount of data being used on the fixed wireless network had been observed in recent months, particularly in peak times.

"In addition to more data being used over a longer period of time, we are seeing a notable increase of concurrent users. This is often referred to as the 'Netflix effect' where many households sit down after dinner to stream their favourite show," NBN Co said in a blog post authorted by Gavin Williams, executive general manager for Access Products.

An upgrade would mean some disruption to telephone and Internet services throughout the process, affecting local resident who were connected to the network, Williams noted.

This could mean that some users would be unable to use their NBN services while the work was going on, with interruptions typically being during the day, and for a number of hours over a few days.

"We will take steps to ensure that any interruptions to service are kept to a minimum while ensuring the safety of workers at the wireless towers," Williams wrote.

"We regret any inconvenience this may cause and ask for your understanding as we perform these vital upgrades. We will work with your retail service provider who will in turn be able to keep you informed and answer your questions."
