New beta of openSUSE Leap open to testers

Community Linux distribution openSUSE Leap has reached the beta phase for builds of its development version 15 and testers have been invited to try it out.

Backed by the Germany-based SUSE Linux company, the final release of Leap is expected in the western spring.

Douglas DeMaio, the head of the openSUSE project, said snapshots of the latest beta would be released as they became available following openQA testing.

New builds will be announced on the opensuse-factory mailing list.

{loadposition sam08}Leap release manager Ludwig Nussel said that one known issue with the beta was that there would be some need for manual conflict resolution.

“The list of obsolete packages is missing but that will be solved soon,” he said. “Everyone is encouraged to download the current builds and help test it. Since this is a major update compared to 42, this time even more testing is required.

“Please check your own uses case, workload, software deployment, hardware support, etc. early so there’s a chance left to get it fixed before the release.”

Bugs can be reported using the Leap bugzilla account.

The distribution gives developers and organisations the ability to bridge to the faster release cycles of openSUSE Tumbleweed — which is a rolling release — or to a more long-term support enterprise solution with SUSE's enterprise distribution.
