BigCommerce partners with Akamai to deliver Image Manager to retailers

Ecommerce platform BigCommerce has selected cloud delivery provider Akamai to deliver its Image Manager solution to its 55,000-plus BigCommerce stores around the world.

As part of the agreement, BigCommerce customers will immediately gain access to Akamai’s automated image optimisation technology.

“Retailers are constantly in search of ways to improve the performance of their storefront, which has become increasingly difficult as ecommerce websites incorporate more functionality and imagery to engage shoppers,” said Brian Dhatt, chief technology officer at BigCommerce.

“Google’s recent decision to include mobile page load speed as a factor in search rankings further emphasises the importance of a high-performing storefront, and through Akamai Image Manager we are equipping BigCommerce merchants with another powerful tool to maximise conversion and deliver world-class experience to their customers.”

{loadposition peter}According to data from Akamai, a two-second delay in Web page load time increases bounce rates by 103%, and 53% of mobile shoppers will leave a page that takes more than three seconds to load.

Akamai  says that with its Image Manager solution, BigCommerce merchants will have the ability to optimise each online image for device type, image quality and download size, resulting in faster page load times, an engaging customer experience and improved website conversion.

BigCommerce says merchants using Akamai Image Manager as part of a closed beta saw as much as 70% improvement in site load times, and additional benefits to merchants include:

  •     Automatic image conversion. Detect and instantly convert online images to software-specific image formats to capitalise on advanced levels of compression provided through WebP, JPEG-XR and JPEG 2000 native to popular operating systems and browsers.
  •     Intelligent image delivery across devices. Automatically deliver resized, mobile-optimised images to mobile shoppers, reducing large files that slow site performance and significantly decreasing the amount of time spent personalising image variants.
  •     Faster page load speeds. Using Akamai’s perceptual quality algorithm, Image Manager lightens the weight of digital images while maintaining the improved gains in performance, especially when viewing sites from a mobile device. Additionally, better performance leads to higher mobile usage and increased conversion rates.

“The decision to move to the Akamai Image Manager network has been a boost to our merchants, enabling them to deliver faster site load times and strengthen their overall mobile site performance,” said Frank Morrall, president at VisionCourse Media, an online marketing and design agency, and a BigCommerce partner.

“What’s more, merchants did not have to invest costly time and effort to further develop optimised images for different devices, leading many to see an increase in site engagement and conversion – especially for mobile shoppers.”

Under the partnership, Akamai Image Manager is now available as part of the comprehensive BigCommerce package to all merchants using Stencil, BigCommerce’s new storefront design framework.
