Samsung announces Galaxy 9, with 'reimagined camera', coming Feb 25/26

Depending on where you are in the world, late February is when Samsung will announce its Galaxy S9 smartphone, with "reimagined camera", presumably launching at MWC in Barcelona.

With the annual Mobile World Congress (MWC) taking place in Barcelona from Monday 26 February until Friday 2 March, it's the place where plenty of things mobile related are launched.

So it should come as no surprise to see Samsung sending out an email, presumably to all those who have either registered their Samsung devices, and presumably those who have registered to watch past Samsung smartphone keynote launches.

For us here in Australia, Samsung advises that its Unpacked 2018 event is on at 4am AEDT on Monday 26 February, and you can sign up here to watch the keynote live.

{loadposition alex08}Those in the US can watch here, although I suppose anyone can watch from there, too.

In case you're wondering what times 4am AEDT is in other parts of the world, it is midday on Sunday, 25 February in New York, 9am in San Francisco, 5pm in London and 6pm in Barcelona.

For those in Seoul, South Korea, it is another early start as it is for Australians, being 2am on Monday 26.

So, what do we know about the S9 from Samsung officially?

All we're told is that it reimagines the camera.

Unofficially, there's a leaked video of a supposedly "dummy" device, which shows a smartphone that looks very similar to the S8 and Note 8, but when you look at the back of the phone in the six-second video, we can see that the fingerprint reader has finally been placed under the camera lens in a centred location.

It's sort-of similar to other smartphones that have a fingerprint reader on the back, but instead of being circular as you'd expect from the iPhone's Touch ID reader, or those of various Android devices including Google's Pixel and Pixel 2 series, it looks like a rounded rectangle.

Here's that six-second video, article continues below:

Interestingly, the dummy phone only has a single camera lens on the back, while other renders or supposed leaks have shown a dual-lens configuration.

Who knows, maybe Samsung will be the first to release a phone with three cameras or more, but if that was really true, we'd probably have heard about it, and I'm just having fun for fun's sake.

There's also talk that the S9 will have a single camera, while the S9 Plus will have the dual-lens configuration, so the question over how exactly Samsung has reimagined the camera are obviously yet to be revealed.

Digital Trends has a lot more detail on what the new camera might be able to do, such as super slo-mo, better low-light photography, and more, as well as other S9 rumours and predictions, so check it out here for more detail.

Tom's Guide talks about a new interface, more AI smarts, thinner bezels, the Snapdragon 845 processor (and presumably the equivalent Exynos processor in different markets) and more.

So, expect the next four weeks to see more leaks, videos, photos, rumours and predictions to arrive, but the date for the S9's official unveiling has been set.
