Swinburne University of Technology has announced that it is using SUSE Enterprise Storage for its rapidly increasing storage needs.
SUSE Enterprise Storage is built on the open source Ceph project and deploys object storage across a single, distributed, computer cluster made up of industry standard hardware.
Larry Morris, senior product manager at the Germany-based SUSE Linux, and the main developer behind the technology, told iTWire in an interview last year that some use cases included disk-based back-up where the software-defined storage solution was used to store the back-up data.
Other use cases were storage for large files such as medical images or video surveillance data; archival data that has not been accessed in a while and is migrated from primary storage systems; and on-premise cloud storage using a SUSE Enterprise Storage Amazon S3-compliant interface.
{loadposition sam08}SUSE announced the development of its enterprise storage product back in 2014. At that time, Morris told iTWire: "We will do to the storage industry the same thing that Linux has done to UNIX."
At Swinburne, the IT department has been pushed to provide for the ever-increasing storage demands without spending too much.
Given that, a statement from the university said it used SUSE's product "to underpin a high-performing, ultra-scalable and secure storage infrastructure at a fraction of the cost of traditional enterprise storage, helping support ground-breaking research".
Swinburne is a public university with a reputation for preparing graduates for life in the working world, as well as for its research in science and technology.
