ownCloud adds app for protection against ransomware

Germany-based open-source file syncing and sharing software company ownCloud has included a new Ransomware App, for business users to guard against 90% of ransomware attacks.

It will be made available to all those who have enterprise subscriptions to ownCloud.

The app enables integration of a blacklist that is updated often to prevent the uploading of infected files and allow roll-back to enable administrators to reset affected files.

Apart from these additional features, account locking also helps to prevent ransomware attacks, prevent access to an account after an attack is detected. While the locking is automatic, it can be deactivated by the administrator if desired.

{loadposition sam08}Users get a message about the lock, and can unblock their accounts after the ransomware problem has been fixed.

“More than 90% of the current ransomware attacks are launched by renaming the file extension. We can effectively prevent this,” said Holger Dyroff, chief operating officer of ownCloud.

“However, the other 10% do not change the file name at all (or randomly). That makes preventive measures much more difficult. But, by featuring the ability to reset files back to a specific date, we provide an innovative extension of today's capabilities in ownCloud.”

Companies can run a test of the new app by downloading it from marketplace.owncloud.com. If they are not running ownCloud yet, they can download the app from owncloud.com/download as a virtual app that is easily installable.
