A brand new update from Samsung Electronics Australia has just arrived in my inbox concerning replacement Note7 devices - here’s what you need to know.
Samsung Electronics Australia has ‘today’ confirmed that replacement stock for Galaxy Note7 customers will be available from today, 21 September, but also notes that ‘Customers should check specific availability dates with their operators or place of purchase.’

HOW CAN YOU TELL IF YOUR SAMSUNG NOTE7 IS SAFE?
Importantly, we are told there will also be a software update made available that customers will need to download for new replacement Galaxy Note7 smartphones. This software update will introduce a green battery icon to identify that the new device does not have the reported battery issue and is safe to use.
WHAT IF YOU DON’T GET YOUR EXISTING NOTE7 REPLACED?
An automatic software update will also be applied to existing Note7 devices that haven’t been returned for replacement or refund, from today, 21 September, which will ‘automatically download and install to all original Galaxy Note7 smartphones that were purchased in Australia to limit the smartphone battery to a maximum charge of 60 per cent.’

Samsung notes that:
- The exact timing of the release of the automatic software update to Galaxy Note7 smartphones in Australia will depend on each individual carrier network
- Galaxy Note7 smartphones purchased outside of Australia or through channels not authorised by Samsung Australia (for example Kogan.com.au and some eBay stores) may not receive the same software package as those devices purchased from either Samsung Australia or an authorised Samsung Australia retailer.
- Customers who purchased their Galaxy Note7 in Australia but are overseas at the time of the software release, will receive the automatic download when they next connect to WiFi.
- The company also states that update is part of its ‘ongoing commitment to safety in relation to the battery cell issue with original versions of the smartphone.’
Richard Fink, Vice President IT & Mobile, Samsung Electronics Australia said: “The safety of our customers is our first priority. For this reason, we are working to identify and execute all appropriate measures to protect customer safety.
“We continue to urge customers who still have an affected Galaxy Note7 to complete a data back-up and factory reset before powering-down the device and returning it to their place of purchase to seek a replacement Galaxy Note7 or alternate remedy of their choice.”
Samsung also notes that ‘the most efficient way to get a remedy for your Galaxy Note7 is to go back to your place of purchase.’

Samsung also states: ‘All Samsung Galaxy Note7 smartphones sold in Australia are affected (whether they were purchased from operators such as Telstra, Vodafone, Optus or retail stores such as Samsung Branded Stores, Samsung’s Online store, JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, Good Guys and websites including Kogan).
‘If you are unsuccessful in obtaining a remedy from your place of purchase, please contact Samsung for assistance. If you have purchased your device overseas or from websites such as Kogan, please contact us so we can support you.’
Samsung has an IMEI identifier tool that lets you determine whether your Note7 is affected by the recall, or not, and you can dial dialing *#06# so the IMEI is displayed on screen.
New devices will also have the following markings on the box so you can tell whether the box is a new or an old device.
