Want the cheapest broadband in the world? Move to Iran

An evaluation of 3351 individual broadband plans in 196 countries has found that Iran offers the cheapest plan, with an average cost of US$5.37 per month. Burkina Faso was the most expensive with an average of US$954.54.

The study found that the 13 countries in the Oceania region, which includes Australia, were among the higher-priced countries.

Australia ranked 104 among the 196 countries, with an average plan cost of US$60.37. New Zealand ranked 108 with an average plan costing US$63.90.

The study was carried out by UK broadband comparison site cable.co.uk and research consultancy BDRC Continental.

The plans were analysed in the eight weeks up to 12 October.

Six of the top 10 cheapest countries for broadband were in the former Soviet Union, including Russia.

Italy was the cheapest in Western Europe with an average package price of US$28.89 per month. The UK was eighth cheapest in Western Europe at US$40.52 per month.

Canada was the cheapest in North America (US$54.92) with the US average monthly plan cost being US$66.17.
