Independent recent surveys conducted by five organisations demonstrate accelerated OpenStack adoption as enterprises increasingly favour multi-cloud strategies.
The surveys were conducted by Cloudify, Heavy Reading, SDxCentral, SUSE and the OpenStack Foundation. The results demonstrate the growth of OpenStack as enterprises increasingly favour multi-cloud strategies, as well as the important role open source software has to play in enabling them.
OpenStack Foundation’s user survey found 48% of Open Stack deployments were also interacting with another cloud. It also found from year-over-year analysis that growth was increasing in non-IT, mainstream industries, including telecom, retail, finance, government and research.
Cloudify’s survey of nearly 700 enterprise cloud professionals found OpenStack was the most widely deployed cloud infrastructure, and also identified the same multi-cloud trend as per the OpenStack Foundation user survey, reporting 51% of organisations are deploying more than one cloud with the combination of AWS and OpenStack being the second most popular cloud infrastructure deployment.

The Heavy Reading survey focused on telecom operators, finding 96% of those already deploying an NFV strategy found OpenStack essential or important.
SUSE’s survey of more than 1400 senior IT professionals found OpenStack was in production in 23% of organisations, an increase from 15% in its 2015 survey. Eighty-two percent were using, or planned to use, OpenStack in the future.
In addition, OpenStack Foundation’s user survey revealed almost 1000 unique OpenStack deployments were completed in 2017, an increase of 95% from 2016.
It also found that production usage of the Ironic bare metal service increased from 9% to 20% in the six months since the Foundation’s last report, seeing adoption by large entities like eBay and the Commonwealth Bank.
Nearly half of all deployments reporting using a PaaS or CaaS tool to manage applications on top of their OpenStack clouds, with Kubernetes remaining the top application framework of choice.
