Oracle extends Cloud@Customer

Oracle CTO Larry Ellison used his Oracle Open World opening keynote to announce two new members of Oracle's Cloud@Customer subscription infrastructure family, among other products.

The basic idea of Oracle Cloud@Customer is that it provides the same convenience and pricing as the equivalent Oracle Cloud product, but the hardware is installed in the customer's data centre to take care of sovereignty and security concerns.

Either way, the infrastructure is provided on a subscription basis, and is fully managed by Oracle.

First announced six months ago, Cloud@Customer now comprises the Infrastructure Cloud Machine@Customer, Exadata Cloud Machine@Customer, and Big Data Cloud Machine@Customer, Ellison said today during his opening keynote at Oracle Open World 2016.

{loadposition stephen08}"You can't get more compatible than identical," he said, referring to the way putting the same configurations into customers' data centres as Oracle installs in its own means "coexistence is as transparent as possible" when it comes to moving workloads from one to another.

The idea is to make life as easy as possible for customers during unsettled times.

"We are in the middle of a generational change," he said, as we transition from a large number of separately owned and managed data centres to "a smaller number of super data centres called clouds."

Cloud@Customer prices are the same as those for the equivalent service in Oracle's cloud.
