Optus says ACCC decision not to declare roaming a clear win for regional communities

Vodafone's not happy, but Optus has welcomed the ACCC's decision not to mandate domestic roaming, saying it's a "clear win for regional communities".

The ACCC decided not to declare roaming for regional Australia earlier this morning, and Vodafone was quick off the mark stating it was a bad decision

However, the same cannot be said for another of Australia's major telcos, Optus.

Into our inbox arrived an email with some commentary from Andrew Sheridan, Optus vice-president of Regulatory and Public Affairs.

{loadposition alex08}Sheridan said:

"Optus welcomes the ACCC’s decision not to mandate domestic roaming, which is a clear win for regional communities. The mobile sector has been the stand-out success story in telecommunications competition.

"Regional communities can look forward to continued investment in mobile infrastructure as Optus follows through on its commitment to spend $1 billion improving regional mobile coverage and services over the next 12 months.

"This investment will improve the choice and experience for regional consumers and businesses.

"We believe the alternative regulatory measures outlined by the ACCC provide an appropriate platform for these significant investments to be pushed out into the more remote regional communities."
