Samsung heir sentenced to five years in prison

Samsung heir Lee Jae-yong has been sentenced to five years in prison for bribery, embezzlement and other charges.

A lower court in Seoul found the Samsung Electronics vice-chairman guilty in a corruption scandal that led to the ouster of former South Korean president Park Geun-hye, the South Korean news agency Yonhap reported.

The Seoul Central District Court, which handed down the verdict, said Lee was believed to have been involved in Samsung's provision of 7.2 billion won (US$6.38 million) in bribes for the equestrian training of the daughter of Park's longtime friend and confidante Choi Soon-sil.

Lee was also convicted of embezzlement, hiding assets overseas and perjury.

He is expected to appeal against the verdict.

The younger Lee has more or less run the company after his father, Samsung chairman Lee Kwun-hee, was hospitalised after a heart attack in 2014.
