To simplify the SSD install process for consumers, a web app promises to make an SSD upgrade a simple process taking less than 15 minutes following the “straightforward instructions.”
Naturally, the 15 minutes does not include the time it takes to backup your hard drive or clone data across, but as you’ll see from the “web app,” Crucial has taken the time to make things simple.
There’s easy to follow steps, there’s video, there’s lots of images and all it’s written in uncomplicated English.
On top of that, the company has crucially tested the online guide/tutorial/app “with everyday people who have never done a hardware upgrade,” as “the web app makes the process much simpler and removes any technical terms people may be uncomfortable with.”

Crucial tells us that “most people can relate to the feeling that you only get when waiting on slow technology, and waiting for a slow computer is no exception,” and pointed to a recent study it commissions which “found that the average Brit’s patience with slow technology lasts 60 seconds before that person starts to get irritated.”
And who could blame them when their smartphones and tablets run on flash storage, while their desktop and laptop PCs likely run on increasingly old-fashioned and glacial spinning hard disk technology?
Unsurprisingly, Jonathan Weech, Crucial SSD’s Sr. Product Line Manager, said: “Our new mobile-friendly web app takes away the jargon and makes the SSD install process simpler to follow and easy to understand.
“When you replace a hard drive with an SSD, your computer can boot up almost instantly, and it will deliver that speed for years to come.
“Many people just accept the idea that computers take longer to start when they get older, but a new SSD transforms your system from the inside out”.
As I’ve personally explained to countless people, “loading files and apps stored on an SSD is like flipping a light switch – it’s almost instant,” although I normally talk about rocket speeds rather than the even simpler explanation Crucial provided.
The company further explains, noting that: “When performing everyday tasks, SSDs are on average 6x faster than hard drives.
“The new web app makes these benefits more accessible to people who may be apprehensive about opening their computer – there isn’t any intimidating technical language and the straightforward installation process is shown clearly through text and video.”
Such a clear and simple guide is something everyone should strive for in a product manual, not just SSD makers, so hopefully we see more of it from providers of ever more products and services soon.
I’d like to say that I wish I could see it all happen in a flash, but sadly it will take longer than that.
Even so, you’ve gotta start somewhere, so kudos to Crucial for coming up with a clever online class to quickly help upgrade your computer.
