An all-female panel discussed the rise of IoT and its need for protection, along with how to do this at a Kaspersky Lab and HPE event last Friday night in Sydney.
Moderated by Reesby Recruitment’s managing director, Jessica Reesby, the panel consisted of Kaspersky Lab A/NZ’s general manager, Anastasia Para Rae, and Kaspersky Lab’s Global Research and Analysis Team (GReAT) member in A/NZ, Noushin Shabab, as well as Tali Friedman, HPE Principal Solution Architect, Karissa Breen, a cyber security advocate from CryptoAustralia and Claudia Warwar, Telstra’s cyber security principal.
Kaspersky Lab APAC managing director, Stephan Neumeier, opened the ceremony by acknowledging the panel, stating: “This evening, we bring together woman experts in the field of cyber security together to talk about the rise of IoT. There are already more than six billion smart devices across the globe and I believe today’s all-female panel will show us what we need to do to protect ourselves with the Internet Of Things.”
Rae said, “The amount of malware targeting smart devices doubled in 2017, putting people’s connected lives at risk. What makes the issue more dangerous is its potential reach. Most of them do not even have a security solution and their manufacturers usually do not produce any security updates or new firmware.
{loadposition alex08}“They also don’t explain to users that they should change the passwords on their smart devices. We hope today’s panel inspires each individual and organisations to step up and take control of security measures in your personal and professional lives.
“Earlier this year, Kaspersky Lab launched Earth 2050 where men and women of art and science come together to predict the world, technology and cyber threats of 2050. Senior security researcher Noushin Shabab took stage to present the top three IoT trends that will happen to Australia in 2030.
This included “Intellectual Advertising Spreading Everywhere,” “Cyber Insurance Becomes Habitual” and “Universities Online to equip students with an education from home,” added Rae.

Tali Friedman, HPE bio:
Tali Friedman is a principal solution architect at Hewlett Packard Enterprise Data Security. She has 14 years of experience in software and a passion for data security. Tali is working with customers to enable data-centric protection so that sensitive data has no value in the wrong hands. Often known as "pre-sales extraordinaire", she loves combining her enthusiasm for all things techie, cyber security and her passion for customers.
Claudia Warwar, Telstra’s cyber security principal bio:
Claudia Warwar has been involved in IT, Risk Management and Cyber Security services for more than 15 years, both as a practitioner and as a business development executive at IBM Australia and Telstra. She specialised in helping clients across industries understand and protect themselves from cyber risks. She has extensive experience on cyber risk assessment, policy, processes and governance, identity management, protection, detection, analytics technologies and more.
Karissa Breen, cyber security advocate from CryptoAustralia and the newly formed Karissa Green Industries bio:
Karissa specialises in cyber security writing, speaking and advice. She also publishes her own IT blog and video blog. She is a cyber security advocate and is a IT brand and event ambassador. She works passionately for a not-for-profit organisation, CryptoAustralia that specialises in advising the Australian public on cyber security and privacy. Karissa launched her own company, Karissa Breen Industries, last week.
Noushin Shabab, senior security researcher, Global Research & Analysis Team, Kaspersky Lab, ANZ:
Noushin Shabab has nearly five years of experience working in cyber security, specialising on reverse engineering and targeted attacks. She joined Kaspersky Lab ANZ in 2016 and is a member of the Global Research & Analysis Team (GReAT) which is an integral part of Kaspersky Lab’s R&D department that leads the company’s anti-malware research and innovation.
In her role, she is responsible for investigations of targeted cyber attacks with primary focus on local threats in Australia and New Zealand markets.
Prior to joining Kaspersky Lab, Noushin also delved in security research and software development for an anti-virus software company. She has first-hand knowledge of rootkit detection and mitigation technologies as well as APT malware analysis.
A graduated from Azad University of Iran, Kaspersky is proud to have their very first, female researcher in the ANZ region.
The event was hosted by Doltone House, Jones Bay Wharf, and is billed as “the second collaboration between Kaspersky Lab and Reesby Recruitment".
