New NBN panel to report on rollout

The Australian Labor Party has agreed to support a Coalition move to set up a 17-member panel that will report on the rollout of the national broadband network until it is completed.

The panel, the setting up of which was moved by government House of Representatives leader Christopher Pyne, will report on the network's progress, NBN utilisation, Australia's global broadband position, NBN activation rates, and any related matters.

There will be nine MPs (four Coalition, four Labor and one other) and eight Senators (three Coalition, three Labor, one Greens and one other) on the committee.

In the previous parliament, the NBN rollout was being scrutinised by a non-government-dominated panel.

The NBN rollout is expected to be completed in 2020 under current projections.
