A contractor has infected 55 traffic cameras in Victoria with the WannaCry worm, according to the state's department of justice.
According to the information available, both intersection and highway cameras were affected.
WannaCry is based on an NSA exploit that was leaked on the Web by a group known as Shadow Brokers in April.
The worm, which attacked Windows systems in May, was weaponised with ransomware that encrypted files and then demanded a ransom.
{loadposition sam08}The Melbourne radio station 3AW said the cameras had been infected through use of an USB flash drive.
The station quoted a spokesman from the department of justice and regulation as saying: "A system patch has been applied, which prevents the spread of the virus.
“The Department is in the process of removing the virus from the affected cameras. The remaining sites will be rectified in the next couple of days.
“The software virus has not impacted the accuracy of the camera system. All infringements during this period have been captured correctly, and no infringements have been affected by the virus.”
The 3AW morning host Neil Mitchell spoke to the Victorian sheriff Brendan Facey who admitted that the worm had been discovered last week.
