Pre-paid mobile challenger OVO has added a number of free international minutes to its unlimited plans, making its impressive plans even better.
OVO is a prepaid MVNO (mobile virtual network operator), broadcaster and telco innovator on the Optus network, and has distinguished itself not only with generous data allocations, but also with data-free radio and sport streaming – with full details to be found at OVO’s site.
What’s new is the inclusion of free international calling minutes to a huge 32 countries to its OVO Mobile Medium, Large and Extra Large plans, at no additional cost.
The countries included are what OVO says is its “most dialled countries,” which include Austria, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Canada, Chile, China, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, UK, USA and Vietnam.

For the Medium plan, which costs $24.95 for 30 days, you get 50 international minutes in addition to the 2GB of data and unlimited national calls and texts.
The Large plan costs $34.95 per 30 days, and gives you 300 international minutes, in addition to 8GB data and unlimited national calls and texts.
Finally, the Extra Large plan is $44.95 per 30 days, and now gives you an extra large 500 international minutes, alongside 12GB of data and those aforementioned unlimited national calls and texts.
Naturally, OVO says the addition of free international call minutes to existing plans is the latest in a string of new offerings, and proudly boasts it is a “disruptive Australian startup combining high value and quality mobile telecommunications with an expanding entertainment content broadcast platform that is available data-free to OVO customers.”
Offering proof, OVO notes that in the last month alone, it has released a “highly-competitive 70GB mobile data plan providing an alternative to fixed home broadband, and signed a broadcasting agreement with Water Polo Australia for its National competition and international events.”
This was preceded by what OVO describes as a "ground-breaking agreement with Southern Cross Austereo to broadcast its Triple M and HIT Network stations across Australia data-free to OVO customers via its OVOplay app."
OVO chief executive Matt Jones said: “With each new development, we are bringing OVO fans more value. This is how a fan first telco should operate.
"A lot of our customers said that they don’t regularly call internationally, but when they do it would be really convenient to do so without having to add OVO Extras credit. So we listened and did just what the fans asked.
"With this latest development, our customers can now call 32 countries for free including the UK, New Zealand or South Africa, on top of all the other services and offerings already at their disposal through OVO, and it won’t make a difference to their monthly bill.
“Plenty of brands talk about being customer first, at OVO we sit down every week and look at the Fan’s feedback and immediately get on and deliver what they are asking for – more data, more flexibility, and definitely more sports and entertainment data-free. It really is the art of listening that makes us genuinely fan-focused,” Jones concluded.
Now, it is important to note that the international minutes allowance does not include SMS, and the minutes are reset every 30 days. Also, if you have used up your included international minutes during that 30 day period, further international calls will be charged per minute, with OVO’s international calling rates here.
