The average Aussie donates about $200 per year – some a whole lot more and some less. Canon wants to make it easy to donate and help the Cancer Council Australia, Australian Red Cross and Starlight Children’s Foundation.
For the months of May-July, Canon is giving consumers a chance to earn cash back, with a unique “Donate or Keep” twist. The campaign, which will see a range of Canon printers promoted through partnered retailers, plays on the fact that a quarter of Australians donate spontaneously. When consumers purchase a Canon printer, they’ll face a dilemma – do they donate their cash back to charity or keep it for themselves?
A wide variety of Canon printers from the PIXMA, PIXMA Endurance, SELPHY, MAXIFY and PRO families will be available as part of the ‘Donate of Keep?’ campaign.
Jason McLean, Director – Canon Consumer Imaging, Canon Australia said, “Donate or Keep’ supports our corporate philosophy of Kyosei – a Japanese word that means living and working together for the common good. We’re proud to partner with some of Australia’s most respected charities, giving consumers the chance to make a difference with the purchase of their new printer.”

Charity really does begin at home, with 91% of Australians saying they would rather donate to local charities than those overseas. Charity also impacts consumer loyalty as 68% of Australians said they would be more inclined to buy products if a percentage of the price was donated to charity. Females (76%) are more generous than males (69%). 60% of millennials would donate more it if was easier and children’s charities are the most likely to receive support.
Canon’s research also showed
- New South Welshmen are most generous at $265 per year
- West Australians at $262
- Victorians at $200
- Queenslanders at $126
- South Australians at $103
- Tasmania, Northern Territory and ACT – let’s keep that quiet
Canon’s partnered charities
By partnering with three of Australia’s leading charitable organisations, the ‘Donate or Keep?’ campaign lets consumers donate to the cause that means most to them.
“The Starlight Children’s Foundation is thrilled to be involved in Canon’s ‘Donate or Keep?’ campaign,” said Holly Roberts, State Partnership Manager at Starlight Children’s Foundation. “Starlight is uniquely Australian and at the heart of our mission, is providing fun, positive experiences for seriously ill children and their families. For as little as $40, which could be earned from one printer purchase, Canon customers have the chance to provide a full year of access to Starlight’s in-hospital programs for a seriously ill child. That’s a small amount to create many joyful experiences in an often-scary hospital environment.”
Cancer Council Australia – Whether it’s helping people today, or being there for those who’ll need us tomorrow, we work across every aspect of cancer and rely on the generosity of community donations to fund our work and help us achieve our vision of a cancer free future. The money you raise will help fund vital cancer research, prevention programs, advocacy and support services for those affected by cancer.
Australian Red Cross – Relief in times of crisis and care when it’s needed most. Red Cross is there for people in need, no matter who you are, no matter where you live. With millions of volunteers worldwide and thousands of members, volunteers and supporters across Australia we can reach people and places like nobody else.
Starlight Children’s Foundation – When a once-bright life becomes dulled by needles, hospital visits and painful treatments, Starlight helps kids forget their illness and re-discover the joy of childhood. We know there’s more to treatment than medicine. That’s why in since 1988, we’ve partnered with Australian health professionals to develop programs based on positive psychology principles that support the ‘total care’ of our children and teens.
To be a part of Canon’s ‘Donate or Keep?’ campaign, consumers can head into retail partner stores including Harvey Norman, The Good Guys, Big W, Officeworks and others.
