WikiLeaks dumps CIA tool for man-in-the-middle attacks

WikiLeaks has dumped another tool from what it says is an archive of CIA material it has called Vault 7 that came into its possession and which it commenced releasing on 7 March.

Named Archimedes, the latest tool, dumped on Friday, can be used for man-in-the-middle attacks on local networks.

Traffic from a local computer can be redirected to a target that is infected by this software and from there onwards to a control server.

According to the manual, the tool was earlier named Fulcrum and renamed as Archimedes from v1.0 onwards.

{loadposition sam08}The manual describes its functionality thus: "Archimedes is used to redirect LAN traffic from a target’s computer through an attacker-controlled computer before it is passed to the gateway.

"This enables the tool to inject a forged Web server response that will redirect the target’s Web browser to an arbitrary location.

"This technique is typically used to redirect the target to an exploitation server while providing the appearance of a normal browsing session."

Archimedes and its earlier iteration appear to have been used between 2012 and 2014.
