May 4 is/was world password day

The first Thursday in May is World Password Day – essentially a day to promote better password habits.

This year’s message is to #LayerUp Your Login by enabling multifactor authentication. A password alone is no longer enough to protect online accounts. By combining your password with additional factors, such as a fingerprint, a code sent to your phone, or a USB Key, you can fortify yourself, and others against common cyber crime like identity theft and social media account hijacking.

World Password Day is backed by Intel and various cyber security and authentication companies try to draw attention to the issue. At least read the information on its website.

PS – 4 May is also Star Wars Day and if the empire had used better security we would all be wearing white storm trooper suits.

McAfee has created a True Key Game that is quite entertaining. “As part of one of the world’s most trusted cyber security companies, McAfee, we know a thing or two about protecting your privacy online and helping to create a safer digital world,” the company said in a blog post. “We want users to feel protected, and we know even small details count. We’re always striving to deliver features designed to increase security and simplify your life. On that note, we have a few exciting new features up our sleeve that we’re unveiling just in time for World Password Day.”

PasswordPing has released free compromised password tool to see if your password is safe. Click here - you may be surprised how weak your password is and if it is frequently used by hackers.

Sticky Password is promoting the importance of strong passwords and 2FA methods in individual security and privacy. It is offering a free 1-year license of Sticky Password Premium (until 7 May). To take advantage of this offer, users should download and install Sticky Password available on this special download page.

  • Never use the same password twice
  • Change them regularly
  • Use a Password manager
  • Implement multi-factor authentication for any transaction
