HP’s “The Wolf” – an innovative way educate on printer and PC security

There are hundreds of millions of business printers – less than 2% are secure. They are easy path to access the corporate networks and valuable data. HP took a different approach to awareness and from Director Lance Acord comes The Wolf starring Christian Slater.

HP introduced the first of a series of global initiatives to elevate awareness of the security risks facing businesses and consumers. It kicks off with award-winning actor Christian Slater and the premiere of the newly launched HP Studios’ web series, The Wolf, highlighting how corporate networks can be hacked and what companies must do to protect themselves.

In the 6 minute series, Slater systematically hacks a company - from the mailroom to the boardroom - through overlooked vulnerabilities and poorly secured printers and PCs. This first installment reinforces that security is no longer just the responsibility of the network or is something at the perimeter, but a concern for everyone.

HP aims to build awareness and create a sense of urgency with IT and Security professionals around the security vulnerabilities of endpoint devices, like printers and PCs in the office, and help them learn how to close these gaps in their security.

HP is committed to delivering secure products and has a dedicated R&D lab focused on security innovation to ensure its printers and PCs are designed with security in mind.

Its latest enterprise-grade printers come with world-class security as standard; their BIOS and firmware are secured and memory intrusion will be detected during runtime. Organisations can also leverage HP Secure Managed Print Services for a range of scalable services from advisory and implementation to governance and compliance.

HP is helping customers secure their devices, documents, and data by defending our Enterprise-class printers with the strongest protection in the industry. Security features include:

  • HP Sure Start enables detection of and self-healing recovery from malicious BIOS attacks, extending the same BIOS security protecting HP’s Elite line of PCs since 2013 to the new HP LaserJet Enterprise printers.
  • Whitelisting ensures only known, good firmware can be loaded and executed on a printer.
  • Run-time Intrusion Detection provides in-device memory monitoring for malicious attacks. It was developed in partnership with Red Balloon Security, an embedded device security company started by researchers from Columbia University. The company has done extensive research for several government agencies, as well as private sector companies in industries such as telecommunications and controller systems.

It’s a good watch!
