Apple files another lawsuit against Qualcomm

Apple has filed another lawsuit against Qualcomm, this time in the UK, upping the legal stoush between the two companies over patent royalties and deals on processors.

The suit was filed on Thursday, and revolves around patents and registered designs, according to the Bloomberg news service.

Apple has already filed a case against Qualcomm in the US and two in China.

These lawsuits were filed in January. In the US case, Apple has accused Qualcomm of charging it "at least five times more in payments that all the other cellular patent licensors we have agreements with combined".

{loadposition sam08}The two China lawsuits accuse Qualcomm of abusing its power in the processor industry and failing to honour promises to broadly licence standard essential patents at a reasonable price.

One of the China actions seeks a billion yuan (about US$146 million) in damages.

The dispute between Apple and Qualcomm is part of a broader push by manufacturers of mobiles to reduce the royalties paid to Qualcomm. The manufacturers have the support of some government regulators in this regard.

While Qualcomm derives most of its income from processor sales, a fair portion also comes from a separate licensing business.

Qualcomm is also facing an anti-trust action by the US Federal Trade Commission and investigations by the European Union and Taiwan.

In December, Qualcomm was fined US$853 million by South Korea over unfair patent licensing practices, a penalty that it has appealed.
