Tech website Bleeping Computer has settled a lawsuit with Enigma Software that was sparked by comments made on one of its forums.
The case goes back to 2014, when Bleeping Computer ran a review of Enigma's SpyHunter software, describing it as "rogue" software. The comments were moderated by a volunteer known as Quietman7.
The Enigma suit, filed in February last year, claimed that Bleeping Computer and 10 commenters had made "false, disparaging and defamatory statements" about SpyHunter.
It claimed that Bleeping Computer owner Lawrence Abrams was promoting and recommending products that were in competition with SpyHunter because it was receiving commissions from those products.
{loadposition sam08}In August, Bleeping Computer counter-sued Enigma, claiming it had been defamed, its trademark used without permission, and a number of other charges.
In the settlement note, issued on Wednesday, Abrams wrote that the offending posts that had led to the lawsuit had been removed.
"While Bleeping Computer may not agree with some of the ways that the product has been marketed, it is clear ESG’s support staff are passionate about helping people with their malware infections," Abrams wrote.
"As part of this settlement, Bleeping Computer also had the opportunity to discuss its concerns about SpyHunter in a conversation with ESG’s CEO Alvin Estevez. Alvin also expressed concerns about what people post about his software product on sites like BleepingComputer.com."
