WhatsApp is an encrypted mobile messaging service. It was purchased by Facebook in February 2014 with the implication that its users' data would never be shared. It is still saying that despite its latest blog indicating otherwise.
WhatsApp’s latest blog “Looking ahead for WhatsApp” reveals changes to allow it to share user data with its parent Facebook for highly targeted advertising.
The blog says, “By connecting your phone number with Facebook's systems, Facebook can offer better friend suggestions and show you more relevant ads if you have an account with them. For example, you might see an ad from a company you already work with, rather than one from someone you've never heard of. You can learn more, including how to control the use of your data, here.”
The updated privacy policy, however, is a wordy document but essentially says, “We may provide you marketing for our Services and those of the Facebook family of companies, of which we are now a part.”
{loadposition ray}
That last clause is a real kicker – Instagram, Oculus, Masquerade, Onavo, Atlas, and Facebook Payments can all have a go at your WhatsApp personally identifiable information. Of course, once that data is shared it falls under the privacy terms of Facebook – and you could drive a truck through some of those clauses (see below).
WhatsApp is clear that the content of its encrypted message system is not available to the Facebook family. But that is about the extent of it.
What is most concerning is that the Facebook family can change terms and conditions as and when it pleases, “We may amend or update our Privacy Policy. We will provide you notice of amendments to this Privacy Policy, as appropriate … Your continued use of our Services confirms your acceptance of our Privacy Policy, as amended. If you do not agree to our Privacy Policy, as amended, you must stop using our Services. Please review our Privacy Policy from time to time.”
Leaving the user with only one option: to leave the family.
It can assign those rights. “All of our rights and obligations under our Privacy Policy are freely assignable by us to any of our affiliates, in connection with a merger, acquisition, restructuring, or sale of assets, or by operation of law or otherwise, and we may transfer your information to any of our affiliates, successor entities, or new owner.”
I suspect it is time to take the family to task and ask them to account for this unwelcome intrusion. But to the Facebook family, privacy is just the heading on a very long, legalese filled, document.
Following is a list of the 98 “datapoints” Facebook formally admits to collecting about you. This is the tip of the iceberg as Facebook takes pole position in the “creepy, intrusive stuff they know about you” stakes.
