A new, modular version of the Pod GPS tracker is set to go into production as the project hits its Kickstarter target.
Sydney-based Pod Trackers has been in the GPS pet tracker market for two years, selling through some well-known retailers in various countries.
Its third-generation product, the Pod 3, builds on the idea of a small and light device that can be attached to a pet's collar to provide a range of modular options to broaden the applications.
These options are sound (to allow short-range location of the pet and to assist in training), ultrasound (to "control unwanted barking and aggressive behaviour"), light (to make the animal more visible at night to reduce the risk of accidents and to assist location), and a high-capacity battery that can run the Pod 3 for up to two weeks.

The supporting app (Android and iOS) can locate the Pod 3 via GPS, generate an alert if the device leaves a specified area, track the animal's activity, and record the paths it follows.
The location is reported via 2G or 3G mobile services. Pod Trackers has a deal with Vodafone and its partners that provides coverage in 175 countries including Australia for as little as $US4.95 a month on a yearly subscription - the company says multiple networks are used in every country. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are used when the Pod is in range of the phone.
The Pod 3 is also designed to be attached to boats (the ultrasonic module can discourage birds, and the optional power dock can reduce or eliminate the need to recharge the Pod's own battery when fitted to a vehicle) motorcycles and and other valuables.
The project's Kickstarter campaign has reached its US$50,000 target with almost a month to go.
Early bird pricing is still available. A US$79 pledge gets a single Pod 3 with three months service (the normal price will be US$147). Other options include modules and multiple units, even a 48-Pod retail pack for US$4,320.
