With apologies to Australian comedian Paul Hogan, “You call that a USB, this is a USB” Kingston has released the world’s largest capacity USB, its 2TB, USB 3.1, DataTraveler Ultimate GT (Generation Terabyte).
While most of us would delight in owning 32 or 64GB the 2TB will hold 1792 x MP4 movies, over 70 hours of 4K uncompressed movies, 512,000 x 12MP images, and 531,344 x MP3 songs. There is also a 1TB version and prices have not yet been announced but expect somewhere north of A$1000. That is comparable to an external 2TB Samsung SSD T3.
It uses a Zinc-alloy case for durability, is 72mm x 26.94mm x 21mm, and has a 5-year warranty. At its release in February it will have the full-size USB A connector – USB-C users (like Mac owners) will need an adaptor but that should not impact read/write speeds.
USB 3.1 Gen 1 offers the same ease of use and plug-and-play capabilities as previous generations of USB, but with a 10X performance increase and better power management. In theory, it can achieve up to 5Gbps (practical speed 300-350MB/s) compared to 480Mbps (35-40MB/s) on USB 2.0.
