Sennheiser has unveiled its 2017 range of AMBEO 3D binaural audio recording devices, new HD wireless headsets, Momentum in-ear buds, and a range of MKE 2 elements/HandMic/ClipMic microphones for action cameras, smartphones, and tablets.
Sennheiser’s AMBEO 3D audio technology program started at CES 2016 with its AMBEO VR Mic.
The new AMBEO Smart Surround is a compact earphone for immersive 3D audio recording enabling consumers capture and listen to binaural audio recordings on their smartphones with ease.
Binaural audio delivers an incredibly immersive 3D experience, placing the listener inside the soundscape and replicating the direction of sounds and spatial characteristics of a given environment. Whether it is a concert hall, a rainforest or a buzzing city – binaural sound makes you feel like you are there.
Dr. Andreas Sennheiser, co-CEO of Sennheiser, said, “Today’s consumers are accustomed to capturing incredibly realistic video, producing 4K and 360° videos. Yet as mainstream technology makes immersive visual experiences ever more accessible, the power and emotion of this footage is too often let down by the quality of sound that these devices can capture. AMBEO Smart Surround is an innovative solution that closes this gap. We are inviting consumers to experience immersive sound by adding a recording earphone into our AMBEO technology program.”

HD 4.50BTNC (Bluetooth, Noise Cancelling) and HD 4.40BT (Bluetooth) headphones
Ivan Kuan, Head of Portfolio Management Lifestyle at Sennheiser, said, “The closed back, around-ear headphones have been created to be perfect everyday companions for wireless listening on the move. The HD 4.50BTNC and HD 4.40BT are designed for always-on, always-connected customers for whom the enjoyment of media and music can be part of every day and every hour.”
Both have 32mm drivers; Bluetooth 4.0; aptX for hi-definition sound; NFC pairing; 19 hours (Noise Cancelling), 25 hours (Bluetooth only) and battery free via 3.5mm audio; collapsible design; and Sennheiser’s balanced sound signature (bass boosted, mids recessed, treble boosted) which allows easy equalisation towards Bass or Analytical.
Momentum in-ear wireless buds
These feature a Bluetooth 4.1/aptX/NFC, sheepskin, Nappa leather covered neck collar and two stainless steel wired buds – the collar has a 10-hour battery life (USB charge) and all controls. It acts as a hands-free speakerphone as well.
The design allows for good Sennheiser signature bass – something all too often lost in ear buds.
Microphones on the move
Sennheiser has already received accolades for its almost indestructible – wind, water, snow, mud resistant - MKE 2 elements microphone that is widely used for action cameras.
It has added a HandMic (handheld) and ClipMic (clip-on lapel) for quality recordings for iOS devices – these use the Lightning connector.
The ruggedized HandMic digital uses an Apogee A/D converter and pre-amp to translate sound into the digital realm while maintaining the famed Sennheiser quality and presence. This cardioid dynamic handheld is highly resistant to EMI/cell phone interference and ideal for mobile journalism, podcasting or vocal, and instrument recording.
Sennheiser’s Achim Gleissner, says “Users are increasingly relying on their mobile devices for recording speech and vocals, but the built-in microphones leave much to be desired. Sennheiser’s HandMic digital is an ideal, easy-to-use tool to upgrade your sound.”
All products will come to Australia in Q2, 2017. Sennheiser’s Australian website is here.
